What Warner Bros. announced
Warner Bros. said Goddard came to the studio with a new idea that could continue the Matrix world while still respecting what Lana and Lilly Wachowski built. That is still the clearest official description of the project. There is no released plot synopsis yet.
What Drew Goddard has said
In early 2025, Goddard confirmed that he was writing the film and said there was not much more he could report yet. In March 2026, he was a little more open: he said the project was still being written, that he needed room to find the best story, and that he takes the responsibility seriously because the Wachowskis’ films had a profound effect on his creative life.
He also said The Matrix Resurrections resonated with him and called it maybe the most emotional of the four films. That does not tell us exactly what Matrix 5 will look like, but it does suggest he is not approaching this as a course correction built on rejecting the last movie.
Cast
No cast has been officially confirmed.
When Goddard was asked whether Keanu Reeves or other original cast members would return, he would not say. So for now, Neo and Trinity are still open questions, not settled ones.
Laurence Fishburne said in 2025 that he would be open to returning as Morpheus if the new film was good and if it made sense, but that should be read as interest, not confirmation.
What we still do not know
