In the fourth installment of The Matrix trilogy, Framestore VFX Studio worked on The Matrix Resurrections. This was a thorny task for Framestore as the team was charged with maintaining a look consistent with the original trilogy, while bringing a whole lot of new VFX elements to the table in a blended blend of live action stunts and fluid CG art.
Using practical filmmaking and digital effects was an important part of the process. There were real explosions with digital debris, and CG crowds mixed with real-world extras. Because it was shot pre-Covid, Lana Wachowski had time to edit it before production resumed after the first lockdown.
